Standard test method for oxidation stability of steam turbine oils by rotating bomb

Purpose

The method according to this standard covers the determination of the oxidation stability of steam turbine oils in an oxygen pressured rotating steel chamber - the bomb.

Brief description of the method

A beaker filled with test oil, water and a copper coil serving as catalyst are placed in the bomb which is fitted with a pressure gauge. After the bomb has been charged to approx. 6 bar of oxygen, it is placed on an oil bath maintained at 150°C. The bomb is rotated axially at 100 r.p.m. the time measured in minutes that is required to reach a specific pressure drop is the oxidation stability of the sample.
