Corrosion and oxidation stability test

Purpose

The method specified in this standard is used to test the ability of oils to protect various metals against oxidation or corrosion.

Brief description of the method

In a test tube, 100 ml of oil are aged for 168 hrs. at 121°C in the presence of 5 test panels made of various metals, with air passing through the oil at a rate of 5 ltrs/hr. At the end of the test, the changes in the mass of the test panels, in the mass of oil, in the neutralisation number and in the kinematic viscosity of the oil are measured. In addition, the test panels and the oil are assessed visually.
