Synergistic effects of additives in boundary lubrication for deep drawing: Deep drawing under extreme conditions

At Lubricants 2009, taking place in Moscow from November 11 to 12, Detlef Pazdzior, Technical Applications Manager at Rhein Chemie Rheinau GmbH, Mannheim, will give a presentation on the various synergistic effects of additives in boundary lubrication for deep drawing based on technical test results.

In terms of technical processing, the main demands imposed on the performance profile of deep drawing lubricants are stable, high-compression strength films with:

  • Good load-bearing capacity
  • Reduction of friction and wear
  • Good lubrication properties and cold-start performance
  • Good wetting properties and adhesive strength
  • Low tool wear and long tool life
  • Close temperature/viscosity behavior
  • Material compatibility
  • Good environmental and health characteristics
  • Easy cleaning, etc.

These individual requirements can be fulfilled using specially formulated additives. Furthermore, users can take advantage of various synergistic effects by specifically combining additives.

To determine these effects, a field test was conducted subject to the strict requirements associated with the deep drawing of stainless steel under boundary lubrication conditions. "We deliberately chose stainless steel for the field test because its smooth surface makes it a particularly difficult metal to process," said Detlef Pazdzior, explaining the test design. Rhein Chemie then tested a number of individual additives and additive combinations under defined conditions. In his presentation, Mr. Pazdzior gives an overview of the results and distinguishing characteristics.

Rhein Chemie is a company with a successful track record in customized additives and service products stretching back over 100 years. The approximately 850-strong workforce develops, produces and sells products for various sectors of the rubber, lubricants and plastics industries. Some 500 people are employed at its headquarters in Mannheim-Rheinau. The company has subsidiaries and production facilities in Europe, Asia and North and South America. Rhein Chemie is a wholly owned subsidiary of LANXESS Deutschland GmbH, Leverkusen, Germany.
