Purpose
The method according to this standard covers the determination of the hydrolytic stability of hydraulic fluids and turbine oils. Hydrolytically unstable fluids lead to the formation of acidic and insoluble contaminants which can cause malfunctions in equipment either by corrosion, valve sticking, changes in viscosity, filter blockage or by a combination of these.
Brief description of the method
75 g of test fluid, 25 g of water and a preweighed bright copper test specimen are placed in a pressure-type beverage bottle. The bottle is closed tightly and rotated, end over end, in an oven at 93°C for 48 hours. The layers are separated and insoluble components are weighed. Weight change of the copper strip is measured. Viscosity change and acid number change of the fluid and the acidy of the water phase are determined.
